About Us

The America-Italian of Organizations Inc, (AMICO) was founded in 1978 by a coalition of civic leaders who were concerned with the status and quality of life of the more than two million New Yorkers of Italian American descent. The initial goals of the organization included working with member organizations to promote public and private human services for the community and to bring attention and corrective action to the needs faced by Italian Americans and community members of all ages and ethnic and racial and cultural groups. In addition, our goals included the collection and dissemination of accurate information about the community and to provide programs to improve resources available within the community. AMICO was established as a non-sectarian organization, and all services are provided free of charge to New York residents without regard to race, creed, religion, sexual orientation or cultural identification.

Amico Services

AMICO, headed by Joan Pastore, DSW, and its community board of directors, provides services to the Center’s 7,000+ members through grants from New York City’s Department for the Aging (DFTA).

Our programs

The programs that we currently sponsor to serve our community include:

  • AMICO 59 th Street Older Adult Center:

Through this program we serve more than 6,000 older persons each year as a place within their community where older adults can come together to socialize, enjoy a hot, nutritious noon time meal and participate in the Center’s numerous classes and activities. Social work and mental health staff are located on the premises to assist with needs as they arise.

  • Eileen C. Dugan Older Adult Center:

Located in the beautiful and historic community of Carroll Gardens, this Center provides a cozy atmosphere where older adults can come together for social gatherings, a noon meal, trips and volunteer opportunities. There is also a caseworker on site to assist older adults with Benefits and Entitlements.

  • AMICO Extended Service Program:

Through this program we are able to provide a number of supportive services to older adults in the community. These services include housing assistance; information and referral; protective services for older adults; benefit and entitlement screening, counseling and assistance completing and submitting applications for benefits and case assistance.

AMICO maintains an active Board of Directors that is drawn entirely from the Borough They help spread the word about AMICO’s services and locating resources for the organization. All Programs are funded by the NYC Department for the Aging.
